The Father and Yeshua in the Covenant of Promise
In Genesis 15:17, Yahweh makes an eternal covenant with Abraham, revealing Himself in two distinct manifestations:
> “And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace , and a burning torch
that passed between those pieces.” (Genesis 15:17)
These two symbols represent:
The Smoking Furnace — The Father (Yahweh), the Supreme Covenant Maker
The Burning Torch — Yeshua, the Light of the World and Covenant Bearer
The Smoking Furnace: The Father’s Presence & Authority
The smoking furnace symbolizes the Father (Yahweh), the originator of the covenant and righteous judge:
The Presence of the Father – Throughout Scripture, cloud, smoke and darkness accompany the Fathers direct presence (Exodus 19:18, Psalm 18:8-11).
His Covenant Decree – The Father declares the covenant, and its fulfillment must be met through divine means.
The Burning Torch: Yeshua, the Covenant Bearer & Light of the World
The burning torch represents Yeshua, who would later walk the path of sacrifice alone, fulfilling the covenant in His blood:
Yeshua is the Light of the World – “I am the Light of the world” (John 8:12).
The One Who Walks Alone – Just as only the burning torch moved between the sacrifices, Yeshua alone took on the full burden of the covenant (Hebrews 10:5-10).
The Ultimate Sacrifice – “This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many” (Matthew 26:28).
Cloud by Day & Fire by Night: Yeshua’s Pre-Incarnate Presence
Many believe the pillar of cloud by day and fire by night in the wilderness was the Father, but Scripture shows it was actually Yeshua:
The Angel of Yahweh in the Cloud – Exodus 14:19 reveals that the pillar of cloud and fire was the Angel of Yahweh, the same being who spoke from the burning bush (Exodus 3:2-6). This was Yeshua!
Paul Identifies the Rock (Messiah) Leading Israel – “And all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Messiah.” (1 Corinthians 10:4).
The Refiner’s Fire is Yeshua – Malachi 3:2-3 speaks of the Messenger of the Covenant coming as a refiner’s fire—this is Yeshua, purifying His people.
The Covenant Fulfilled in Yeshua
In Genesis 15, Yahweh alone walks through the sacrifice, taking on the full responsibility of the covenant. This foreshadowed Yeshua, who would later take on the curse of the broken covenant (Galatians 3:13-14) so that we could be redeemed.
The Father (The Smoking Furnace) decreed the covenant and its requirements.
Yeshua (The Burning Torch, Cloud by Day, Fire by Night) took on the covenant’s burden and fulfilled it through His sacrifice.
Through Yeshua’s atonement, the New Covenant is established, the curse is removed, and the blessing of Abraham is given to all who believe (Galatians 3:14).
